Go read! Tim Challies on the movie The Shack

.

The movie based on William P. Young’s bestselling novel, The Shack, is set for release on March 3. Both the book and movie trouble me. Fiction and film are incredibly powerful, and when what is portrayed is unbiblical, sound doctrine is undermined. Please take the time to read the following article by Tim Challies.

“For some time, I have been considering whether I should see and review it. I am quite sure that watching and reviewing The Shack would prove to be a wise business decision. I could get to an early screening, write up a review, and see a nice bump in my site’s traffic. Pageviews are the currency of the Internet and as a blogger I am supposed to base my decisions on what will maximize them. Even better, watching and reviewing The Shack could be genuinely helpful to others. That is especially true if the movie proves to be as deeply flawed as the book. A review might serve to equip people to watch it with discernment or even to avoid watching it altogether.

“However, I am far more sure that watching and reviewing The Shack would be an unwise and even sinful spiritual decision. For that reason I will not be seeing or reviewing The Shack. Let me explain why…”

  1. I haven’t read this yet but I have to say that there are those who get their theology from The Shack. It is so out there blasphemous that only those who do not know God’s Word very well fall for its false doctrine. I’ve met them. They call God a she not realizing that our God and Savior is Jesus Christ and He is no “she.”

Hope you are feeling better, precious friend! And Tom, too! You are in my prayers! God bless! \o/

    • Thank you so much for praying, Sherry!
I wouldn’t be surprised if some get their theology from The Shack. A person I saw as a mature Christian hesitantly recommended it to me. Another sister, who had lost her young married daughter to a sudden cerebral hemorrhage, had recommended it to her. Both readers were devout Christians who had suffered. So we all have weaknesses where we can go astray. You’re right there are those who call “God” “she”. All the nonsense can be overwhelming and we must stay strong in the Lord, for He has work for us to do. Praise Him! Maranatha!

  2. The book is rightly called The Shack because its writer’s foundation is not The Rock. A shack gets blown and tossed to and fro by every wind of false doctrine for which this author is promoting.

      • Thanks Maria. My husband and I discuss these things and he is in process of critiquing the author’s other work called “Eve.” That one too is not short in spewing out more spiritual venom. Beware.

          • You’re welcome. He sure is. I think he is used by the enemy to bring doubt to God’s Biblical revelation of coming down and revealing Himself in His masculine form. “Eve” is another that exalts the feminine, a common theme it seems. It is sad liberal Christians are forming their theology from his work when people only really need to get well versed with Scripture so people can easily spot falsehood. I like a pastor’s analogy about tellers getting trained in scrutinizing a bill and its qualities so that when a counterfeit comes, they would know it when they see it.

            • Caeli, Catholic veneration of Mary is another kind of worship of the feminine, that is, goddess worship. Perhaps you’ve seen this already but the Jesuit Douay translation of Genesis 3:14,15 corrupts the Word in this way (1899 American version):

14 And the Lord God said to the serpent: Because thou hast done this thing, thou art cursed among all cattle, and beasts of the earth: upon thy breast shalt thou go, and earth shalt thou eat all the days of thy life.
15 I will put enmities between thee and the woman, and thy seed and her seed: she shall crush thy head, and thou shalt lie in wait for her heel.

The RCC ascribes to her titles, acts, and characteristics of the Lord, such as, Co-Mediator and Co-Redeemer, sinlessness, and much more.

It is true, as you remind us, that if we know the genuine – God’s Word – we are completely armed against deception.
