Evangelical Theological Perspectives on Roman Catholicism

As the Pope commemorates the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation, what he has in mind is an altogether different kind of reformation, i.e. a reformation that will make his church more catholic and more Roman, doubtfully more evangelical.

LEONARDO DE CHIRICO

What Kind of “Reformation” Does Pope Francis Have in Mind?

Leonardo De Chirico (1967) planted and pastored a Reformed Baptist church in Ferrara (northern Italy) from 1997 to 2009. Since 2009 he has been involved in a church planting project in Rome and is now pastor of the church Breccia di Roma…

  1. It seems to me that “protestants” (modern-day denominations) need to move on from castigating the Catholic religion. It is false and corrosive, but if true Christians move forward and make their own lives better by a deeper study of the Word, that would be ideal. Why do the denominations keep beating a dead horse? They are out of Catholicism now and should not look back.

    • Beth, the Church of Rome continues to attempt to entice what she used to call “heretics” but now calls “separated brethren” back to her fold. From the time of the Council of Trent in the 16th century, she has vigorously pursued her Counter-Reformation and sought to exterminate Biblical faith. It isn’t “a dead horse” then, Beth. She has made great gains in her agenda, for example among some Pentecostals and Evangelicals, and experienced some losses. Why should Christians stop warning others about her when there is a need to do this? As you labor with your husband to serve the Lord overseas, Pastor De Chirico serves in another tough place, building Christ’s church in Rome amidst its countless superstitions and its other “gospel” which is no gospel. Thank you for commenting but I’m perplexed. Yes, we should study God’s Word more than ever but we also must warn others of danger.

  2. There is becoming a blurred line between right (GOD) and wrong (Catholicism and all other religions). We MUST stay in God’s Word and not dip even our toes over or into that blurred line! Jesus defeated the devil at the cross! The devil is a sweetly lies! We must continue to remember-no matter how “sweet” the catholic leader (which is not the Holy Spirit) he is of his father the devil. The father of lies.
Jesus is TRUTH COMPLETE TRUTH ❤ ALL GLORY AND HONOR TO GOD!

  3. Whatever “reformation” Pope Francis has in mind won’t be inline with the pure gospel of Jesus Christ. Anything that comes out of Catholicism can’t be trusted, simply because the root of that tree has been corrupt from the get go.

    • Amen, Scarlett! Francis’s word can’t line up with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

      Matthew 7
15 “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. 16 You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles? 17 Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Therefore by their fruits you will know them.
