The Canadian press recently reported about an apartment in British Columbia with walls soaked by a mysterious oil. The Catholic resident claims the oil is comprised of the tears of Mary. Hundreds of Canadian Catholics have already made a pilgrimage to the site.
These Marian “miracles” occur quite often all over the world. In response to a claim of an alleged Marian miracle or apparition, the local Catholic bishop must examine the evidence and decide if it’s “legitimate.” Even if the bishop gives his blessing, Catholics are not obligated to believe in the miracle.
What are Evangelical Christians to make of these constantly occurring Marian miracles? I certainly don’t believe they can be attributed to Mary. I think a lot of them can be explained by naturally occurring phenomenon, some of them by the power of suggestion and emotional hysteria, and perhaps some by demonic activity.
