A prophet for an apostate generation

Jeremiah

J.

Chosen by God,

a prophet to be,

reluctant was he,

nevertheless he obeyed.

.

Made to see

the results of sin’s tyranny,

its terrible fruit –

rejection by God.

.

Recently I watched a video uploaded by a father-son evangelistic team from the UK, Ex-Catholics for Christ, entitled A Revolting And A Rebellious Heart. To quote the son James, “Jeremiah was a prophet for an apostate generation.” He was saying as well, and it’s clear to see, that our generation is characterized by apostasy too.

Another church, Arann Reformed Baptist Church in Dublin, offers solid preaching online about the ministry of Jeremiah. You can listen at their YouTube channel

Among the similarities between Jeremiah’s generation and ours is that there are many false prophets and teachers today, and that the people who listen to them willingly embrace their delusions.

.

Jeremiah 5:30,31

A wonderful and horrible thing is committed in the land;

The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests bear rule by their means; and my people love to have it so: and what will ye do in the end thereof?

Jeremiah 23:30-32

Therefore, behold, I am against the prophets, saith the LORD, that steal my words every one from his neighbour.

Behold, I am against the prophets, saith the LORD, that use their tongues, and say, He saith.

Behold, I am against them that prophesy false dreams, saith the LORD, and do tell them, and cause my people to err by their lies, and by their lightness; yet I sent them not, nor commanded them: therefore they shall not profit this people at all, saith the LORD.

.

One Greater than Jeremiah wept for His generation, and the judgment that was coming upon it –

The Seed of Abraham,

The Great I am,

The Lion of the tribe of Judah,

The Lamb of God –

Jesus Christ!

.

Matthew 23:37,38

O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not! Behold, your house is left unto you desolate.

.

Just as in Jeremiah’s generation, and in Jesus’ day, judgment is certain. Through His servant Paul, the Lord warned us that evil men arise from within the church. How this is possible is almost beyond comprehension, except that Jesus explained that an enemy sows them among us. He also warned that the world would hate us. So, we are surrounded by enemies and have enemies at our own table. But this is no surprise, for in His love and faithfulness, He told us it would happen. Just as He continues to seek and save that which was lost, we are called to continue to labor, resting in Him, standing clothed in His armor, praying for all of our brothers and sisters, preaching the Gospel to every creature, and earnestly contending for the faith that was once delivered to us.

This is what John saw – this is what we will see,

.

Rev 7:9-10

After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands;

And cried with a loud voice, saying, Salvation to our God which sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb.

.

He is the Lord God Almighty – He purged us from our sins – All authority in Heaven and earth has been given to Him – He will do what He says – Not one of His words will fail! Everything that happens, in the church and the world, proves that all that He said is true. Live a holy life and don’t be overcome by fear – trust Him!
